Into the Woods Volunteer Event – Idaho Shakespeare Festival

By: Beth Brookhouse

When you work at Hawkins, prepare yourself for volunteering at various events. Our Founder, Gary Hawkins, is a true believer of giving back to the Boise community. Aren’t we lucky?! Volunteering is so much fun! I think one way or another we all got exposure to William Shakespeare in school growing up. Now we get the chance to volunteer for a night at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival during their fairytale presentation of “Into the Woods.” I so looked forward to the whimsy and depth of this play. What’s the saying? Over the river and through the woods….

The Idaho Shakespeare Festival has been bringing world class theater to life under the stars since 1977. The mainstage season consists of five plays that take place in a world class state-of-the-art outdoor amphitheater located in a stunning and unique habitat reserve. Picnicking is encouraged and food is available onsite from the gourmet grab-and-go Shakespeare’s Marketplace by Lisa Peterson. A beloved community tradition not to be missed! Idaho Shakespeare Festival also operates a vibrantly diverse selection of educational programming and outreach including School of Theater, Camp Shakespeare, Apprentice Company, and two school touring performances, Idaho Theater for Youth and Shakespearience.

Thank you to Adam Wheeler, Senior Analyst, Portfolio Management for putting this event together for us and for coordinating it! When you volunteer you get choice seating, not in the woods, but on the hillside. You can bring blankets, pillows, low back chairs, food and beverages. We volunteer before and after the show, depending on what areas they want us to focus on; it could be cleaning and prepping for the show, greeting guests, assisting guests to their seats, etc. Afterwards, it’s a wind down of cleaning up.

I highly recommend this volunteer event if you ever get the chance. It’s very satisfying to help out, to appreciate this magical fairytale production in an outdoor amphitheater, and to experience the delight in an award-winning music and lyrics show with your co-workers after a good night’s work!
