Be More Than Pink : Race For The Cure

We all know someone who has been affected by or diagnosed with cancer. In one way, it is a heaviness that cannot fit on the tip of your tongue. It is a shadow that has the potential to mark a time of your life with unhappiness.

Growing up, I played on a softball team named “The Cure.” I later found out that our coach, my teammate’s father, had lost his wife to breast cancer. He coached his team in her honor and every year he had the team participate in The Race. He gave us the opportunity to be in an environment where we are interacting and connecting on something that impacts people in a beneficial way.

Looking back, I see my coach as inspirational. . We all have something we can give. Each one of us has the ability to contribute in our own way with the tools we have at our disposal, however that may be. My coach was able to see that; see the potential to serve, to give back with what had been given to him. A gem characteristic, a gem forged from pain & loss, polished by courage and faith.

Sachi, a survivor of breast cancer recollected on her journey. Using the analogy of an ocean to describe her experience: “Swimming in big waves is about not knowing what’s going to come next, only knowing that what comes might kill you. But you keep yourself, your mind and body calm in that situation, and you turn it into something beautiful and magical.”
So in another way, it is ethereal. It is an emotional, unpredictable storm. It too shall pass.

Participating in Race for The Cure means we show that we have the power to pivot, to band together steadfast with support and love, with a foundation that will brace our brave women. Creating camaraderie that is bigger than us & surges through each person’s soul with warmth, and perseverance.

It was important. The feeling was very prominent and the point was clear. We were all standing together, in unity. Taking action in the way we were each able to. We were all More than Pink.
